A unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that private attorneys hired by states to collect back taxes and other debts can act on behalf of state officials, reversing a Sixth Circuit decision that lawyers tapped to collect money owed to Ohio misrepresented themselves by using the state attorney general’s letterhead.
In an opinion authored by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the court said that the attorneys did not misrepresent themselves and did not run afoul of debt-collection laws.
